Why poured rubber

The industry standard for commercial playgrounds

Schools, parks, churches, daycares, and HOAs choose poured-in-place rubber because it protects kids, stays put, and looks great for years.

Engineered fall protection

Cushion thickness is matched to the critical fall height of your equipment, so the surface meets ASTM F1292 impact requirements.

ADA accessible

A firm, stable, seamless surface that wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers roll across easily, with no loose material to kick out.

Custom colors & designs

Choose from a wide range of EPDM colors, or add rivers, hopscotch, games, logos, and shapes poured right into the surface.

Porous & fast-draining

Water drains straight through the bound rubber, so the play area is usable soon after it rains.

Low maintenance

No raking, refilling, or topping off. Sweep or blow it clean, and patch high-wear spots if they ever need it.

Long service life

A properly installed and maintained system commonly lasts 12+ years of daily, high-traffic play.

How it's built

Two rubber layers over a solid base

Poured rubber is mixed and troweled by hand on your site. A thick, shock-absorbing cushion layer does the safety work, and a colorful wear layer on top takes the traffic and the sun.

It can be installed over compacted aggregate, asphalt, or concrete.

EPDM or TPV wear layerabout 1/2 in.

Colored, UV-stable rubber granules bound with polyurethane. This is the layer you see, and where designs are poured.

SBR cushion layer1.5 in. to 4.5 in.+

Recycled rubber buffings bound with polyurethane. Its thickness is set by the fall height of the equipment.

Prepared baseSite specific

Compacted crushed stone, asphalt, or concrete, graded for drainage and edged to hold the system in place.

Final thicknesses are set by the project specification and the manufacturer’s ASTM F1292 test data.

Fall height

Thickness is matched to your equipment

The taller the play equipment, the thicker the cushion layer. We size every surface to the highest designated play surface in the use zone.

Our process

From site visit to play-ready

One team handles your project from layout to final cure.

  1. Measure & spec

We confirm square footage, equipment fall heights, colors, and any custom designs.

  2. Prepare the base

Excavation, compacted stone or existing pavement, edging, and grading for drainage.

  3. Pour the cushion

The SBR cushion layer is mixed on site and troweled to the required thickness.

  4. Finish & cure

The colored wear layer and any designs go on top, then the surface cures before play.

FAQ

Poured rubber questions

Don’t see your question? Our team is happy to help.

How thick does poured-in-place rubber need to be?

It depends on the critical fall height of your equipment. Low play areas may need about 2 inches total, while equipment with a 10 ft fall height needs a much thicker cushion layer. We size every project to the ASTM F1292 test data for the specified system.

What can it be installed over?

Poured rubber can go over a compacted aggregate base, asphalt, or concrete. Existing pavement must be sound and drain properly. We’ll review your site and recommend the right base.

Is poured rubber ADA accessible?

Yes. Its firm, stable, seamless surface is one of the most accessible playground surfaces available, and it’s a common choice for accessible routes and inclusive playgrounds.

Can we get custom colors or designs?

Yes. Choose solid colors, blends, or designs like rivers, hopscotch, games, numbers, and logos poured right into the wear layer. View the color options or send us your idea.

How long does it last, and what maintenance does it need?

With routine care, a commercial system commonly lasts 12 years or more. Keep it clean by sweeping or blowing off debris, and have high-wear spots such as under swings and slide exits inspected and top-coated as needed.

How long does installation take?

Most projects take a few days on site after base preparation, depending on size, thickness, and weather. The surface then needs time to cure before play.

How much does poured-in-place rubber cost?

Pricing depends on square footage, fall height (thickness), base work, colors, and site access. Request a quote and we’ll put together a project-specific price.
